What is a Chiller System?
A Chiller System is a central cooling system that removes heat from water and supplies chilled water to air handling units (AHUs), fan coil units (FCUs), or process equipment. It is widely used in commercial buildings, hotels, hospitals, shopping malls, data centers, pharmaceutical plants, factories, and industrial facilities where continuous and efficient cooling is required.
Unlike conventional air conditioning systems that cool air directly, a chiller cools water, and this chilled water is circulated through a network of insulated pipes to provide cooling throughout the building.
How Does a Chiller k?System Work
A chiller system operates by transferring heat from the building to the outside environment through a refrigeration cycle.
1. Evaporator
The evaporator absorbs heat from the return chilled water, reducing its temperature (typically to 6–7°C). This chilled water is then pumped to AHUs or FCUs for air conditioning.
2. Compressor
The compressor increases the pressure and temperature of the refrigerant gas after it absorbs heat in the evaporator.
3. Condenser
The condenser removes the heat carried by the refrigerant. Depending on the chiller type, this heat is rejected either to ambient air or to water through a cooling tower.
4. Expansion Valve
The expansion valve reduces the refrigerant pressure, allowing it to cool before entering the evaporator again, completing the refrigeration cycle.
