What Is HVAC???

HVAC stands for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning. It refers to the systems used to control temperature, humidity, and indoor air quality in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings






1. Purpose of HVAC Systems

The main purposes are:

  1. Heating: Provides warmth in cold weather.

  2. Cooling: Lowers indoor temperature and removes heat.

  3. Ventilation: Circulates fresh air and removes stale air.

  4. Air Quality: Filters pollutants, allergens, and dust.

  5. Humidity Control: Maintains moisture at comfortable levels.

    2. Main Components of an HVAC System

    A. Heating Components

    • Furnace: Burns fuel (gas, oil, or electricity) to produce heat.

    • Heat Pump: Moves heat from outside to inside (or vice versa).

    • Boiler: Heats water or produces steam for radiators or underfloor heating.

    B. Ventilation Components

    • Ducts: Channels to move air to different areas.

    • Fans / Blowers: Push air through ducts and vents.

    • Vents / Registers: Openings for air intake or output.

    • Air Filters: Trap dust, pollen, and particles.

    • Exhaust Outlets: Remove smoke, odors, or pollutants.

      C. Air Conditioning Components

      • Evaporator Coil: Absorbs heat from indoor air.

      • Condenser Coil: Releases heat outdoors.

      • Compressor: Pressurizes refrigerant to transfer heat.

      • Expansion Valve / Capillary Tube: Reduces refrigerant pressure for cooling.

      • Refrigerant: Fluid that transfers heat from indoor to outdoor air.

      D. Control Components

      • Thermostat: Sets and regulates temperature.

      • Sensors: Measure temperature, pressure, and humidity.

      • Control Boards: Coordinate all system operations automatically.

        3. How HVAC Systems Work

        Heating Mode

        1. Furnace or heat pump generates heat.

        2. Heated air is circulated through ducts using fans.

        3. Thermostat controls the temperature by turning the system on/off.

        Cooling Mode (AC)

        1. Indoor air passes over evaporator coil → heat is absorbed → air is cooled.

        2. Heated refrigerant gas is pumped to the compressor, which increases pressure and temperature.

        3. Condenser coil releases heat outside.

        4. Refrigerant passes through expansion valve, cools down → cycle repeats.

        • 4. Types of HVAC Systems

          Ventilation

          • Fresh air is brought in.

          • Stale or polluted air is expelled.

          • Filtration ensures clean, healthy indoor air.

            1. Split AC Systems

            • Indoor and outdoor units.

            • Common in homes and offices.


          2. Window AC

          3. Central HVAC Systems

          • Uses large ducts.

          • Can heat or cool an entire building.

          • Often includes air filtration and humidity control.

          4. VRF / VRV Systems

          • Variable Refrigerant Flow / Volume.

          • Energy-efficient, multiple indoor units with one outdoor unit.

          • Individual temperature control for each room.

          • All components in one outdoor unit.

          • Used for commercial buildings.
